Today we started to Illuminate project. It was fun because last year I worked on the concept of reflection so I knew before some terms and special projects about this topic. Nevertheless, yesterday night, I researched again about the lights, shadowplays, and light reflections so this morning, I knew what to focus on in the King's Cross. Our tutors wanted to us take photos, videos and drawings from different perspectives. This part went through the little bit complex because  I lost a lot of time while I was drawings, I gave very unnecessary effort on the details. At the end of the day, I started to secondary research for the progress.

The second day of the illuminate project, I started to think about some terms; "Bright, Shadowplay, Geometry,Light..."These terms reminded me of the concept of reflection, I researched this concept and collected some information with different artists who are using a reflection of light in their works. The artist who impressed me the most was the Yayoi Kusama. She is creating infinity mirror rooms by using light and mirrors. She gives stars effects to the light, therefore, people feel like they're in space.
After this research, I noticed reflection can divide some parts and we can use a lot of different materials for creating a reflection. All-day I worked on it, I found some examples and projects. Tomorrow, I 'll start to drawings.

Today, I started drawings. In my designs, I inspired by Yayoi Kusama. Yesterday I thought about it and I decided to create a building by using the concept of reflection. At first, I was thinking to make lighting but after some sketches and researches, I changed my mind because I wanted to use daylight to make reflection. I aimed to keep the building in the background and only I want to show the light. Firstly, I placed the lights on the building in the form of rectangular and circular. Then I realized I couldn't use sunlight like this so I chose the bowl shape from the primary research to reflect the light and I tried to place these bowls in different ways in the building.
After that, I started material selection. I tried the mirrors for the reflection but did not work because it was not flexible so I researched the materials and I decided to use aluminum foil for the bowls. In this way, the dish will reflect the light in the best.

Today's Contextual Practice class was very complex for me because I misunderstand some parts so I couldn't catch up easily. We created our gifts by using the videos we took on Monday. During the three day, I worked on the light reflections so in the gif part, my aim was to show the movement of light. In doing so, the pipes would be faded and the attention of people would be only to light. At this point a preview of the idea I want to make in outcome would appear.

Artificial light / led

Shortlived, easy to malfunction and resource consumption too much

I chose "The dance between darkness and light will always remain" from Joy Bell C. as a quote because in this project I decided to work on the light reflections and also I will apply this concept to my 3D model so I think, this quote tells the main idea. According to me, Reflection is a dance of light and darkness because darkness makes the light stand out with its moves so reflections appear more clearly in the dark. I also think that the part that will always remain matches the definition of reflection because we can see different reflections every second of the day. At the same time, the reason I use this article is to be able to load too much meaning and thus draw the relevant audiences attention

Lastly, our tutor gave us a different resource and we filled the worksheet according to that. After this work, I learned what questions I should ask when doing research.

Last day of the week, we started making 3D models. Although it was very ordinary, I decided to make the main building rectangular because in this way, the building will lose its importance and reflections will attract attention. After making the cone shapes by using paper, I coated them with aluminum foil for the bowls. After combining the two parts, I thought about some critical questions “ What will be this building ? who will use it? where will it be? “. Tomorrow, I’ll be working on it.

Today was our last day for completing the project so I worked on my 3D model and I tried to make photoshop for my outcome. I selected city’s squares for the background because I wanted to make an library as my final model so everybody can go there easily. During my photoshop part, I used some apps which are “Eraser” and “ Inpatient". It was fun, I had done before a lot of times and I was not forced because of this reason. When I finished it, I noticed that I did not pay attention to the scales and angles in the photograph but I couldn't change it much because of the app I used. I was planning to find a new app if our time was not limited. So the next time, I'll investigate and use another app for my digital outcomes.

As a result, today I was generally interested in the small details of my project. After the class, I am planing to write a summary of my project and prepare a double page for the presentation.

The last day of the project was little bit exhausting for me because I tried to show all details on double page and I wrote summary about my "Illuminate" project.

(On my last page, I tried to give a little bit information about my development process from the beginning. At the end, I showed the construction stages of my model. I plan to keep research pages longer in the next project.)

Today also we looked at each other's sketchbook. I observed a lot of people used different materials and they went to workshops during the last week so I felt very nervous. I didn’t go to any workshop before and I think this situation affected my work quality. I am planning to go workshop for the next project and also today I learned that how I should be using research pages from our tutors. At the same time, I gave a lot of feedback from my friends about the research pages they said that I increased my research pages compared to old projects. I will pay more attention to this now.

Reflection

Since the beginning of the “Illuminate” project, I focused some terms of light for example; shadows, reflections, shadow games, illustrations, etc. Especially concept of shadow and reflection impressed me very much because during the project I saw different exhibitions and artworks that I had not expected before. I was amazed by the detailed use of shadows and light reflections by artists in their works. Also, Stephen Kite’s “Shadow Maker” book and Dean Hawkes’ s “Imagining Environments” speech changed my perspective. Formerly, I thought shadows were insignificant and they never attracted my attention but after this researches, I began to think more about these. When I examined architectural structures, I saw that shadows and reflections were not coincidental, as Hawkes said. I also noticed that daylight is a very powerful source so I decided to work on it. The concept of reflection reminded me of Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Mirror Room” , I inspired by that, I started to do sketches for my outcome. My goal was to neutralize the building by highlighting reflections and I was planning to use led for this. I designed different models but I wasn't sure of any of it because that wasn't the effect I wanted to give. Then I changed all the shapes. I used bowls shape to increase the reflection. After determining the model, I moved to the material selection. I tried a lot of different reflective materials for the bowl for example; mirrors, mirrored paper, metal, etc. but they didn’t work. Whereupon, I worked with aluminum foil because it was flexible and it could reflect the light. I think the bowls in the building reflect the sunlight in the morning and the city lights in the evening so I set the location in the photoshop as the city center and also I decided to build the building as a library because I combined the concept of reflection with enlightenment and defined the library as enlightenment as a metaphor.
