Structure and Surface
"Structure " can be any form of interconnected objects that support or provide shape. It can be a frame, a support, a series of elements that intersect and work together or a constructed 3-dimensional shape / object.
"Surface" can be a membrane, fabric, net, web or screen, or a surface texture.
VISUAL DICTIONARY
1- Fragile
Fragile means easily broken or damaged. I noticed that spider webs and raindrops could fall into this category.

2- Looped
- Looped is a structure, series, or process, the end of which is connected to the beginning.
I took some photos of bubble nylon and chandelier for this concept because they are moving in the same order. Like a pattern.
3- Perforated
- A perforation is a small hole in a thin material or web. There is usually more than one perforation in an organized fashion, where all of the holes collectively are called a perforation.
4- Facetted
- One of the small, polished plane surfaces of a cut gem. A similar surface cut on a fragment of rock by the action of water, windblown sand, etc.
5- Modular
- Modular is employing or involving a module or modules as the basis of design or construction.
6- Knitted
- Knitting is a method by which yarn is manipulated to create a textile or fabric, often used in many types of garments. Knitting creates multiple loops of yarn, called stitches, in a line or tube.
7- Skeletal
- Existing only in outline or as a framework of something.
8- Textured
- Not having a smooth, plain, or regular surface.
9- Covered
- Overlaid or spread or topped with or enclosed within something; sometimes used as a combining form.

10- Woven
- Form by interlacing long threads passing in one direction with others at a right angle to them.
11- Porous
- Having minute interstices through which liquid or air may pass.
12- Stretched
- Be made or be capable of being made longer or wider without tearing or breaking. (Flexible)

- I decided to make a secondary research about fragile, stretched, facetted, modular, skeletal, porous. -
Secondary Research / FRAGILE -1-
In my first research, I gave spider webs and water drops as an example of "fragile". So for my secondary research, I wanted to work on these; especially spider webs because nowadays, a lot of designers use this form and I want to examine.
Spider webs reminded me of Koike and Poenisch's Nested Skyscraper because they used the web's form for the outside of the building. It seems like a spider's area.
Ryohei Koike and Jardon Poenisch's Nested Skyscraper
It’s built kind of like a spider Web, with fabric-and-concrete netting wrapped around a carbon-fiber internal frame. The nets are porous, but their transparency can be adjusted for sunnier or shadier spots to keep the building evenly lit and heated. "The tree-like internal structure means the tower doesn’t have to follow the rigid, one-floor-on-top-of-another look of regular skyscrapers. Instead, modules can be slotted into branches wherever they fit, and then held in place by the net."
STRETCHED -2-
Monika Grzymala’s Dynamic Installations Made of Sticky Tape
German artist Monika Grzymala uses tapes of all kinds to create her pieces: packing, masking, adhesive, upholstery, etc., which are stretched, cut, and criss-crossed in relation to the space they are occupying. One of her works, titled “Drawing Room” (2012), involved a 3.1 mile long continuous piece of tape that was stretched intuitively, across floors, columns and walls, in a way that overwhelmed the space and immersed the viewer inside of her “drawing”.
( I researched about this work because she uses "stretched" term. )
Every piece she creates is entirely site specific and conceptualized depending on the space around it.
Numen / For Use Tape Web
This work's idea is same with Grzymala’s Dynamic Installations. They are using concept of stretched and they are creating this form by using different materials. After these research, I have learned that I can use more than one material to create a stretched effect.
FACETTED -3-
Espace Culturel de La Hague / Périphériques Architectes, Marin + Trotti Architects
The 2500 sqm Espace Culturel de la Hague, designed by Peripheriques and Marin + Trottin is an example of urban space where all that connected to music, dance and theatre come together.
The west angled entrance leads to the passage which separates the concert hall and the music school. The interior volumes are made of triangular perforated anodized panels. The perforation done helps in cutting the noise from the alley as an acoustic baffle for the theatre and school. However, the design outside the building shows the facetted concept.

Modern engineers use mathematical models to calculate the stress that are likely to occur on building structures. This model carries the results of a structural analysis in graphic form. Red indicates areas of potential weakness. Cooler blue and green show areas of little or no stress. The design was worked out with the engineer Cecil Balmond.
I was very impressed with this work while visiting A&V Museum. The work reminded me of the concept of facetted. In the beginning, only the structure and colors of the building caught my attention but then I was really surprised to read the text because I had never heard that the analysis of architectural works was done with colors.
MODULAR -4-
Precht's The Farmhouse
Architects Fei and Chris Precht developed The Farmhouse as a way to reconnect people in cities with agriculture and help them live in a more sustainable way.
The conceptual modular system would allow people to grow food in residential tower blocks to eat or share with their local community.
"I think we miss this physical and mental connection with nature and this project could be a catalyst to reconnect ourselves with the life-cycle of our environment," said Chris Precht.
"The system doesn't limit the height of the tower, because it is adaptable to a different thickness of structure," Chris Precht told Dezeen.

I was inspired by these researches to design my own model. I combined different concepts in my works.
SKELETAL -5-
City of Art's and Sciences / Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela.
The City of Arts and Sciences is a cultural and architectural complex in the city of Valencia, Spain. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela.
The complex is made up of the following buildings, in order of their inauguration:
L'Hemisfèric
- an Cinema, planetarium and laserium. The building is meant to resemble a giant eye. The Hemesfèric, also known as the planetarium or the "eye of knowledge", is the centerpiece of the City of Arts and Sciences. Its design resembles an eyelid that opens to access the surrounding water pool. The bottom of the pool is glass, creating the illusion of the eye as a whole.
El Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe
- an interactive museum of science that resembles the skeleton of a whale. Much of the ground floor is a basketball court sponsored by a local team and various companies. The building has three floors and it is used for exhibitions. The third floor is known as the "Chromosome Forest" and shows the sequencing of human DNA.
The building's architecture is known for its geometry, structure, use of materials, and its design around nature.
L'Umbracle
- an open structure enveloping a landscaped walk with plant species indigenous to Valencia (such as lavender, bougainvillea, palm trees etc). The design is inspired by the human skeleton and It harbors in its interior The Walk of the Sculptures, an outdoor art gallery with sculptures by contemporary artists.
* It includes 55 fixed arches and 54 floating arches that stand 18 meters high. *

POROUS -6-
Sea-shells reminded me of Mar's sculpture. In this work, Marc Fornes inspired by shells form. I was interested in the design of the building because a specific form was used and the object was imitated so I felt like I am looking at big seashells. I want to create this feeling in the structure that will be designed with inspiration from spider webs.
A Porous White Aluminum Sculpture at The Jinji Lake Biennale
Marc Fornes has designed and built a number of thin-shell pavilions and installations that push the limits of form, structure, and space. Somewhere between architecture and art, each public project aims to provide an otherworldly experience for its visitors, while also contributing to the visual identity and social life of its place.
"Unlike the surrounding texture of the city, this curious structure radiates an otherworldly quality. It casts a strange shadow. It seems to conceal something behind its porous shell. Like seeing the full moon on a clear night, you can start to identify its surface, its irregular craters, and its possible depths. You are pulled closer into its far-reaching orbit and prepare to enter into its interior atmosphere." - Marc Fornes
