"Rubber"
Rubber is a flexible, unbreakable, plastic-like material made from some tropical plants or oil and natural gas. They are also classified according to their type and intended use because rubber has different shapes, colors and structures.
Usage Areas:
- Balloon
- Rain Boots
- Tire
... In the second part of my research, I found untreated shapes of rubber. I have observed that there are different shapes even in the unprocessed state.
Jeff Koons
Jeff Koons / Celebration Series
The example of the balloon reminded the famous artist Jeff Koons. I love his works because it makes a substance look like a different substance. For example, he makes metal sculptures and gives them a balloon effects like a rubber. Also, his work dealing with popular culture and his sculptures depicting everyday objects.
"Consisting of a series of large-scale sculptures and paintings of balloon dogs, Valentine hearts, diamonds, and Easter Eggs, was conceived in 1994. Some of the pieces are still being fabricated. Each of the 20 different sculptures in the series comes in five differently colored "unique versions",including the artist's cracked Egg (Blue) won the 2008 Charles Wollaston Award for the most distinguished work in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition. The Diamond pieces were created between 1994 and 2005, made of shiny stainless steel seven-feet wide."

Blake McFarland
While researching rubber, I found Blake McFarland. He makes sculptures from tires. With these sculptures, which have a great contribution to recycling, used tires, which can cause significant damages to the environment, have turned into works of art. After this research, I learned that rubber is an environmentally harmful substance. Maybe I can find solutions to this issue in my project.
Antony Gormley / Exhibition
I visited the Royal Academy of Arts for Antony Gormly's exhibition. This work impressed me very much because although the iron is not a flexible structure, the artist adds a sense of flexibility and consequently iron looks like rubber.
"I was trying to destroy the fixed co-ordinates of a room and make a space/ time continuum (a line without end) that was both a thing and a drawing."
The work consists of up to 7 kilometres of raw metal rod that arcs from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, creating a three-dimensional drawing in space.
This installation acts as a kind of vector field, encouraging the viewer to move through its structure, and in so doing, disrupts the authority of a single-point perspective, necessitating, instead, a constant renegotiation of the visual field.
"To Carry"
"To carry" has many meanings, but the most common is movement. For this reason, I focused on this meaning and used this concept frequently in my studies.
movement :
1. an act of moving.
2. a change or development.
In brief, Movement is defined as changing locations or positions, a group of people with a shared aim or development or change that occurs. According to this explanation, I went back to my rubber research and examined the "Usage Areas" section and I noticed that the balloon, the tire and the rain boot are matching the concept of movement. I wanted to combine the two studies in a common point, I aimed at the old serum tubes and the concept of "movement".
The bond between the two is quite clear. The liquid is displaced through the serum tube.
- The same situation exists in the work of Soto.
In the work of Soto, the work of art gains difference according to the angle of view.
But when I think outside my first research, days came to my mind from the concept of "movement"
**** So I planned to make a lighting from rubber.
Jesús Rafael Soto / Penetrable
After my research about rubber, Old serum tubes came to my mind and its reminded me of the Jesús Rafael Soto's "Penetrableblue" 3D work. I saw this work in The Miami / Perez Art Museum. The pipes used there were made of rubber-like material and were very similar in appearance. Thus, I wanted to focus on these works and the artist.
Jesús Rafael Soto (05.06.1923 - 14.01.2005)
He was a sculptor and a painter. He stated that he opposed the word "plastic" and made researches on the path of Optical Art.
In 1952-1953, it aimed to obtain vibrations with colored areas placed on a horizontal and vertical net. In 1957, he realized the first Vibratory Structure consisting of thin iron bars and ropes hung in front of a backdrop. With the displacement of the audience, the image gains motion and the format changes continuously. In the work, the form has lost its materiality. The audience itself, the place the audience is in, the time of displacement are the factors that change the perception of the work.
Soto has also designed three-dimensional works that can be entered into the audience, space, and light. The artist has produced at least 25 of these enterable, interactive works. Soto used thin and hanging tubes and rubber-like materials of different lengths. These works are completed after being perceived in the mind of the viewer.
Rubber Lightings
After I found the rubber- lighting examples, I changed my mind and decided to make sculptures because I learned rubber is not a suitable material for the lightings.
What is Narcissism ?
Narcissism is that a person falls in love with himself and keeps himself above everything. This situation is a state of chaos, self-loss and distancing from reality.
Narcissus by Caravaggio
In order to better understand the concept of narcisism, I searched artworks made with this theme.
Narcissus by Caravaggio (1597)
"Caravaggio’s “Narcissus,” painted in 1597 illustrates the Greek myth of Narcissus who falls in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Caravaggio utilizes body positions to demonstrate Narcissus’s admiration for himself: he is leaning his body and tilting his head toward the pond in a loving manner almost as if he is trying to kiss the reflection. Additionally, his left hand seems to be in the water, which shows him trying to touch the image in the water in an attempt to get closer to his “love.” The way Narcissus looks at himself is as if he looks at a baby: a gentle loving glare."
Girl Before a Mirror by Pablo Picasso
Girl Before a Mirror by Pablo Picasso (1932)
"Girl Before a Mirror, painted by Pablo Picasso in 1932, depicts a women admiring her appearance in the reflection of a mirror. The women's elongated arm is reaching for the image. Picasso portrays her body as disproportionate and unbalanced. Because she is so involved with herself, the body doesn’t seem to matter. When the woman stares at the reflection in the mirror the image she sees is only of herself and her “perfection”; She doesn’t see the environment around her. Picasso shows that people are blinded with their own egotism. "

Mind Map
After the research about Picasso and Caravaggio's paintings, I've listed some words about narcissism. When I making this list, I focused on what the pictures made me feel. Then I started examining the word "superiority."
In the end, I tried to do something from these studies as an outcome.
PLAN 2
I wrote my ideas on the paper about the outcome then I used these mind maps for 3D modeling part.
